| Lincoln Site Tours
began operating in the spring of 2001. Living in the
city Mr. Lincoln called his hometown, I became a fan. I read every book I could get my hands on from the
appropriately titled, “Lincoln Public Library”. My
thirst for knowledge about our 16th President led me to
inquire more about the places he frequented here in
Springfield such as his home, law office, the old state
capitol, New Salem and Lincoln’s Long Nine Museum in
Athens, IL.
During this time I met
other fans of Mr. Lincoln’s including historians,
scholars and authors. (Read any book on Lincoln by Dr. Wayne Temple, and you will not be
disappointed) I learned many things about the Lincoln
family from these well-read men and women. It was
as if I was attending college on Abraham Lincoln. After
all, Mr. Lincoln was a self educated man and learned
everything he knew from reading books. Why couldn’t I
learn about him the same way? The more I learned, the
more I learned that there was more to learn. I
continue to learn about Mr. Lincoln on a daily basis.
In the
fall of 2000 relatives paid me a visit and wanted to see
the “Lincoln Sites” and asked me if there was a company
in town that gave guided tours. Up until then I had
always been a guide to myself having the luxury of
living in this city and the time to search out the
places I wanted to see and return when I wished. I told
my relatives I didn’t know if there was a company that
gave guided tours. So I gave my first guided tour
that fall morning of 2000 with my relatives.
It was during that
first tour that I saw a need for a guided tour company
offering more than just a ride to the sites and a
pickup. A guided
tour that was informative, educational, fun and that
provided something extra, such as little known trivia
about the Lincoln family.
(Did
you know that the Lincoln’s dog, Fido, met the same fate
as his master?)
I also wanted visitors
to understand that Abraham Lincoln was more than our
16th President who freed the slaves and was
assassinated. I wanted them to know he was a complex
man. He was a farmer, flat-boat riverman, store owner,
inventor, poet, surveyor, lawyer, husband, father,
storyteller, politician and a God fearing man.
I
wanted to offer a more personal tour. In this way, we work
with you and customize tours to your liking and time
constraints. If your happy letting us plan your tour, we
have our favorite places that we like to visit and think
are important for you to see as well. Taking all of this
into consideration, Lincoln Site Tours was born.
“Necessity is the mother of all inventions”, including
Lincoln Site Tours.
Since the spring of
2001 we have worked with and entertained numerous
private, corporate, school, group tours and individuals
worldwide. It’s been our pleasure serving them, because
we love to talk about one of the greatest presidents of
the United States and our hometown hero. Plus, we just
like meeting new people and passing along stories about
the ‘Railsplitter”. I guess it’s just the Midwestern
hospitality we learned from Mr. Lincoln.
We hope you’ll let us
entertain your group on a guided trip through Abraham Lincoln’s
life in Springfield and the surrounding areas. You’ll
learn and see more in one day with us than on your own.
Plus everyone on the tour receives “The Little Know
Lincoln Trivia Sheet” chocked full of Lincoln trivia
nuggets. If you choose to visit the sites by yourself,
then we insist that you have a great time learning about
Lincoln and hope you’ll visit us again in the future.
